Abstract

Malaysian Nationhood Studies or Malaysian Studies is a compulsory, prerequisite course that the Universiti Utara
Malaysia (UUM) students are required to take in order to graduate. The course aims to help students develop their
self-identity as well as increase their patriotic values, nationalism, volunteerism and leadership skills. However, the
implementation of teaching and learning activities of this course to a large number of students is quite challenging.
Various responses and feedbacks were given by students with regard to this course. Some perceived this course as a
heavy, boring, and factual subject, while few others noted that the course instructors were monotonous. Hence, the
researchers have considered conducting the course through Student Centred Learning (SCL) approach and changed
the classroom climate into a more conducive, fun learning classroom. Kahoot quizzes have been applied as an
approach to boost the students’ interest in attending this course at UUM. Kahoot orGame-based Classroom
Response Systemwas first initiated in 2013. Classes have become more engaging through Kahoot when students took
their quizzes online with their marks being displayed instantly on the screen in front of the class. In this study, the
students presented their reflections of the use of Kahoot and noted their personal views on the impact of using
Kahoot in their learning process. Data were analysed descriptively using percentages. The findings reveal that the
majority of the students were excited and had fun using online quiz activities. The application of Kahoot has made
mundane classes become livelier as well as motivates students to excel and become more active in their class. The
use of Kahoot quizzes is has also succeeded in inculcatinglifelong learning culture among students in tandem with
the 21st century learning goals.
