Abstract

The Ocimum species also known as Tulsi in India is considered as a gift in Ayurvedic
medicine. Among many plant extracts, the Ocimum leaf extract has been widely used in the
green synthesis process which has numerous medical applications. Ocimum is a rich source of
phenolic compounds which are responsible for the rapid reduction of metal and metal oxide
nanoparticles. The FTIR and UV Visible characterization methods are efficient spectroscopic
techniques in identifying significant molecules in bio-compounds. This review article is
presenting the FTIR and UV Visible spectroscopic analysis in identifying the key biocompounds of the Ocimum leaf extract which play important role in the synthesis process of
metal nanoparticles. The metals considered for review are Iron, Silver, Gold, Platinum and
Zinc Oxide. The FTIR and UV Visible spectroscopic methods revealed that the involvement
of the Phenolic compounds in the Ocimum extract were responsible for the bio-reduction of
metals into its metal nano particles.
