Understanding People Dimension towards BIM Culture Change in Consultancies

Abstract

BIM is widely accepted in the construction industry. There are various sources indicating that BIM culture change is
imminent towards achieving a successful implementation of BIM. It is vital to understand that to adopt BIM within
an organization the four pillars of BIM: people, process, policy and technology are considered. The paper focuses
on the people dimension as BIM is perceived as technological driven while it should be people driven. The aim of the
paper is to present an overall understanding of people towards BIM culture change in consultancies. This paper is
part of an on-going research that focuses on developing a strategy for embedding BIM culture change in
consultancies. A case study was conducted at organisation X, three sources of data were adapted. These are: focus
group, survey and interviews. The drivers and challenges of embedding BIM are presented in the paper. Four
Dimensions for embedding culture change were identified which are categorised under the BIM pillar “people”. As
a result, people are reflected as principal towards embedding BIM culture in organisations. The findings of the case
study supported the development of a people driven strategic themes for BIM culture change with integrated drivers
and challenges of embedding BIM within a consultancy organisation. The Obstacles identified are categorised in the
context of people within an organisation. The paper could increase the awareness of people dimension when
adopting BIM.
