Abstract

In 2016, India had produced nearly 277 million tonnes of waste a year and this figure is said to increase to 388
million tonnes by 2030. The urban population of India alone accounts for nearly 65% of the total waste being
generated. Most of this waste manifests in the form of overflowing dustbins, untreated garbage, and excessive stench
on roads. The root cause behind these problems is improper management and disposal of garbage that is generated
by households, industries, hospitals, institutions, etc. The paper aims to solve this issue and proposes the designing
and implementation of simple, easy to use smart bins which would ensure a smooth and efficient way for people
across the city to dump their garbage without polluting the surroundings. The proposed bin possesses many benefits,
the most important of them being the use of renewable solar energy to power it. Equipped with a solar panel, a
charge controller, ultrasonic sensors, Bluetooth module and an Arduino Uno board along with other components,
the bin would automatically open when a person wants to throw garbage into it and automatically close once they
leave. A message will be sent by the Bluetooth module on the bin to the person in charge of the waste collection to let
them know when the bin is full. Most existing models of smart bins are either too complex or do not possess a
comprehensive set of useful features such as height detection, automatic opening and closing, etc. in one single bin.
The proposed model aims to combine a set of functional and optimized features while also taking care to not
increase any complexity while designing and implementing the bin
