Abstract

This paper presents a cost effective approach to increase the end user power quality as well as to reduce the power
consumed by inductive loads throughout the day. Poor power factor may cause overheating, malfunctioning and even
firing up or explosion of electrical equipment. Operating the system with a low power factor degrades the quality of
power and increases the charges on energy consumption. The fines imposed on the end user for poor power factor can
be reduced by applying power factor compensation units consisting of capacitor banks or Flexible AC Transmission
devices (FACTS). An economical and simple method of power factor correction for domestic applications is
demonstrated in this paper. The power factor improvement and hence an improvement in power quality by application
of the Simple Power Factor Control scheme using a capacitor bank has been elaborated. This control scheme has been
verified using Proteus software. Also, a hardware prototype has been developed to study the effectiveness of the system
