Abstract

Suprasegmental sounds in Japanese are functional, so they become a very important part of communication. This is also a concern for teachers and learners in the language acquisition process. This research is focused on Japanese suprasegmental long sounds (chouon), with the aim of analysing the effectiveness of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) in mastering chouon by Indonesian learners, and identifying differences in terms of learningduration (treatment duration) in relation to the mastery of the chouon. This study used an experimental method with a quantitative approach to analyse data. Research data in the form of speech output were obtained through pronunciation tests with taping and recording techniques. 39 stimulant words were chosen as research instruments and were used in the pre-test and post-test by paying attention to the composition of sounds, located at the beginning, middle, and end of the words. The learner's speech was then played to the native speaker to be assessed. The data were then analysed using T-test. The results show that after the application of CTL, there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores in class A and class B. This is a significant change in learning outcomes in mastering suprasegmental chouon sounds. Moreover, there is no difference between class A with a 50-minute learning treatment and class B with a 100-minute learning treatment. This shows that even in a short time learning, the mastery of chouon can be achieved.
