Abstract

The capabilities of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in education have delivered effective
and enthusiastic teaching and learning environment. Thus, the study aims to investigate the hindrances of
vernacular school teachers in using the VLE as a teaching mechanism. The unified theory of acceptance and
use of technology (UTAUT) and the Self Determination Theory (SDT) have been integrated to ascertain the
real problem faced by the teachers in using VLE. Utilizing an explanatory sequential mixed methods design,
60 teachers were adopted using a stratified random sampling technique in the first phase while 3 teachers
were selected in the second phase using a purposive sampling technique. The results indicate that there is a
significant relationship between the self-determination and the use of VLE. The qualitative result from the
interviews revealed the accessibility and workloads were contributed to the downfall of VLE usage. More
investigation is needed on the proper planning and policy to ensure the continued use of VLE.
