Abstract

One of the most challenging jobs is to teach Mathematics to the students who are not having reasonably good basic concepts in the subject. Similarly, it is all the more difficult for the students themselves to learn mathematics without the desired base of prior knowledge. Both as a student of Board of Secondary Education of Assam (SEBA) and as a teacher in a school affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the researcher has closely observed the performance of the students in Mathematics and has found that the performance in the subject Mathematics is poor as compared to the other subject of studies in the schools. Present paper is comparative study of the performance of the secondary school students of both the boards in Mathematics in relation to some select variables viz study habits and the attitude towards the subject Mathematics. The study is supported with empirical evidences which are gathered through multitude of sources. The study combined both quantitative and qualitative research techniques for collecting and interpreting data. Findings reveal that the performance of the students of both the boards in the subject Mathematics is comparatively poor than the other school subjects. Further the performance of the students of CBSE is better than that of their SEBA counterpart and this can be explained by causes like Students’ Study habits and Attitude towards Mathematics.
