Abstract

Little ran of kutch is situated in Gujarat. Little ran of kutch is a deserted area. Rivers like Banas, Kankavati, Rupen, sarswati, machchhu is coming into the little ran of kutch. Water from these rives stored into little ran of Kutch. Saline water intrudes with fresh water from Suraj Bari creek area. In the month of the July to December, fresh water stored in little ran of Kutch but it becomes brackish water because of sea water intrusion. By barricading Suraj Bari creek through Suraj Bari bridge we can stop sea water intrusion in creek area. Objective of study is to check the feasibility of fresh water storage in little Rann of Kutch by storing river & primary storm water. Using ArcGIS, satellite images from Landsat 7/8 are analysed on the temporal basis from year 1995 to 2019 with temporal period of 5 years. Reservoir area is calculated from ArcGIS. Digital Elevation Modelling (DEM) is used to find the mean depth of area and after that water storage capacity is calculated. This methodology is being used to determine the storage capacity. The area of the storage is 3541 Sq.Km. and the volume of storage is 29.03 trillion liter. This study helps to find fresh water potential in little ran of kutch and it will be Asia’s biggest fresh water storage. It may end the water scarcity problem of Saurastra & Kutch region. Study further investigates that any type of engineering structures could be made so sea water intrusion is stopped.
