The Impact of COVID-19 on the Main Pillars of the Project

The COVID-19 pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) poses a challenge to health systems in the countries that have been affected. It is important to understand the effects of COVID-19 on projects. The literature review was conducted by reviewing the existing literature, reports, and legislation that have been enacted regarding the management of epidemic outbreaks in engineering projects around the world, especially in Iraq. An exploratory study was carried out, which included a group of 48 engineers working on engineering projects in Iraq. Results were obtained. About 83% of the respondents indicated that the impact of the epidemic and related policies on the project schedule's performance was significant, and about 78% of them indicated that the epidemic caused significant delays in the schedule.while about 52% said that the employer's desire to determine an appropriate compensatory period for the completion of the work was significantly affected. while only 40% said that the epidemic will affect the start of projects scheduled to be established in the future due to the economic deterioration caused by the epidemic negatively. in the supply chain and caused serious monetary effects that cannot be underestimated. 80% of the respondents indicated that the epidemic had a significant impact on the payment of workers’ dues, and 65% of them said that their projects were affected by the delayed cash flows. The imposition of the curfew was the main reason for the delay in the arrival of materials for projects, and the participants indicated that there were no plans to manage projects. In light of the decrease in materials, these factors had a big impact on the work tools and the time it took to finish the project.
