Abstract

In India, the agriculture sector employs 49.9% of the workforce and it is the seventh largest agricultural exporter in
the world, but it still lacks necessary automation and largely relies on manual labor. Analyzing the problem faced by
the farmers in Tamilnadu, India, an idea was implemented on smart agriculture using IoT. Smart agriculture is an
automated way of agriculture, that can reduce human labor and can save time. The idea mainly focuses on banana
plantation, which detects the age and the ripening stage of the banana, by using various machine learning and deep
learning algorithms that focuses on issues such as reliability, optimization of resources and localization of the IoT
based devices. This idea greatly reduces the farmer’s effort largely in the country and the distances travelled by a
farmer, from the place of residence to his/her farmland which is huge, estimated 4.66 kilometers on an average. This
specific project uses a Raspberry Pi which helps to detect the age of banana post the harvest time to the time where
it turns to complete yellow, stage by stage. This work can also be viewed via a Smartphone using the VNC Viewer
app which is inbuilt on the Raspbian OS and can be downloaded in the Smartphone’s app store. This allows the user
to be check on the progress at ease, from wherever the user is.
