Tunrung Pakanjara: A Manifestation of the Character Building of South Sulawesi Society

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the meaning contained in the Tunrung Pakkanjara drum pattern and its role as a manifestation of the character building of the people of South Sulawesi. This study used a qualitative research method with an ethnographic approach. ­­The methods of data collection were observation, interview, and documentation. Tunrung Pakkanjara drum pattern is widely known among the people of South Sulawesibecause this drum pattern is always used in the opening and closing of the Paganrang art in various activities in addition to being the dance accompaniment. The results of this study indicate that the meanings and values ??contained in the Tunrung Pakkanjara drum pattern resemble the character of the people of South Sulawesi, namely having consistency,perseverance,spirit and driving force to be a human being with a noble character. Thus, Tunrung Pakkanjara is no longer just a means of entertainment and rituals but has an important role in shaping the character of the people of South Sulawesi.
