Islanding detection in PV-BESS microgrids using EMO-ESPRIT

Abstract

Recently, PV based battery energy storage system (BESS) becomes a crucial section in micro grid. The PV based BESS causes more transients in the grid connected system and causes islanding situation. This work presents an islanding detection method based on Exact model order ESPRIT (EMO-ESPPRIT) which includes the advantage of both active and passive islanding detection methods. The real time data such as real and reactive powers, frequency, harmonics, current and voltage of microgrid, PV voltage and current etc. are recorded using real time data logger. These data are used by EMO-ESPRIT to detect islanding situation. The simulations are done for different scenarios such as load changes, battery charging and discharging. The results are validated with UL1741 standards. The EMO-ESPRIT method is also compared with ESPRIT method.
