Challenges of work life balance of female teachers of higher education with special reference to Pandu College

Abstract

Work life balance is the key to happy and contented personal and professional life. It may be defined as the prioritisation between personal and professional activities in an individual’s life. The issue is more grave in case of the working women. The present paper is an attempt to understand the challenges of work life balance faced by the female teachers in the field of higher education. The higher education has undergone tremendous change in the recent decades with new regulations of workload for the teachers. The workload of the teachers in full employment according to the UGC, should not be less than 40 hours in a week for 30 working weeks in an academic year. Direct teaching- learning process hours should be 16 hours for Assistant Profesor and 14 hours for Associate Professor and Professor respectively. They are to discharge other responsibilities of research, extension and corporate life as well. In such a situation, female teachers are faced with the challenge of work- life balance. Thus the present study aims to know about the stress level and challenges faced by the female teachers of higher education. It also tries to understand the various means adopted by them to cope with the maintainence of a balance between their personal and professional life. The present study falls under descriptive survey method. Purposive sampling method will be used to select 30 female teachers working in Pandu College, Guwahati. Data will be gathered using a self- structured questionnaire. Using appropriate statistical techniques, the data will be analysed and thereby conclusion will be drawn.
