Exploring Muga Silk : The Golden Treasure of Assam

Abstract

As famous as its picturesque  tea plantation is Assame’s Muga silk. The gorgeous fabric is known for its extreme durability and natural yellowish golden tint, was once reserved only for royalty.  In most of the time, it is compared to being as expensive as gold. The golden treasure of assam, has only managed to gain more popularity and now becoming covered for traditional Assamese wear and wedding item.

Muga culture constitutes a significant part of socio-economic lives of local people. The Muga silk production in Assam came into spotlight during the Ahom dynasty (1228-1826). In 2007, Muga silk was given geographical identification and the logo of authentic Muga production was given by Assam Science and Technology and Environment Council. The silk has been contributing the state’s GDP from various grounds. From social and economic point view the state is gaining from Muga silk. Present paper laid emphasis on the socio-economic contribution of the Muga silk with special reference to Assam.
