Women Empowerment in the Tea Garden Areas of Assam: A Case Study on Kondoli Tea Estate of Nagaon District

Abstract

The term ‘Women Empowerment’ always gains a great importance in the academic debates. Women Empowerment is a term to understand a woman’s life by strengthening them physically, mentally, socially, politically and economically. Women Empowerment has also an adverse impact on developmental goals of a society. Now the question is how women can be empowered. Here we can say women can be empowered in various ways i.e. by providing them education, by giving them equal opportunities in every field, by empowering them economically, politically, socially etc. While looking at the tea plantation industry; we can see that although production and cultivation of tea in Assam is increasing substantially over a period time, the condition of tea garden laborer including the women is not improving. They have never received proper attention in the developmental process. The women in the tea garden areas face severe problems in every field. They are always exploited socially, politically, economically and physically.Here an attempt is made to look into the issue of Women Empowerment in the tea garden areas of Assam and their problems and prospects. We will also find some means and ways to empower them. Both primary and secondary data have been used in the study. The study after considering all the issues reveals that women empowerment is totally necessary in the tea garden areas of Assam.
