HVDC Protection System Integrated With SMES And SFCL Modules For Mitigation Of Fault Current

Abstract

In this paper a benchmark HVDC system is integrated with different protection devices for the protection of the elements connected in the system from DC line faults. The HVDC system introduced exchange powers between two networks at 500kV through a DC line. The DC line needs to be protected from line to line or line to ground faults. For the protection of the line a) MCB b) MCB with SFCL and c) MCB, SFCL and SMES devices are introduced. A comparative analysis is carried out with different combination of protection devices on the line. A frequently occurred line to ground fault on the DC line is considered for the analysis, and converging fault currents are compared with different combination of devices. The modeling and analysis of HVDC system with protection devices is designed using MATLAB Simulink software.
