Abstract

Modern life is characterized by complex technological innovations and consequently extreme sophistications which cause drastic changes in the style of life of people. Knowledge explosion makes it possible for anyone to bring any kind of information at finger tips without much effort. In this scenario, the role of teachers is being altered to a great extent; however, the basic responsibility of teachers as social engineers does not change and accordingly it is necessary for them to possess certain qualities. The present study investigates the relationship between value orientation of prospective teachers and their prosocial attitude. A value orientation inventory and a prosocial attitude scale (both prepared by the investigator) were administered among a random sample of 200 prospective teachers of various secondary teacher education institutions in Kerala and the scores were subjected to Pearson’s correlation analysis. The findings demonstrate the existence of significant, positive, and substantial relationship between value orientation and prosocial attitude among student teachers. The study suggests that proper inculcation of values among student teachers is imperative for developing prosocial tendencies.
