Independence of Transmigrants in Farming Business in Banyuasin and Ogan Ilir Regencies, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia

Abstract

To equalize the population and encourage regional growth, the Indonesian government has implemented a population movement program from densely populated areas to areas that are sparsely populated. The program is called Transmigration, and the people who are displaced are called Transmigrants. The main source of livelihood for the transmigrants was farming. The development of self-reliance of transmigrants in farming is a target that should be the goal of community development and transmigration areas. The research objective was to analyze the level of independence of the transmigrants in farming and the dominant factors affecting transmigrants' independence in farming. The total population was 3,537 transmigrant households with a total sample size of 359 respondents. The effect between variables was tested using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling). The study results found that the level of independence of the transmigrants in farming in the low category. Factors that influence independence are the availability of supporting factors and empowerment of transmigrants.
