Implementation of Green roofs –A requisite for Sustainable development -Review

Abstract

Generallyroofs are the cover for all the buildings that protect the people from rain, heat and provides security. Roofing requires in construction of houses, buildings in all parts of the world. In urban areas building construction increased pollution, climate change, spread of diseases, lower the quality of people lives and leads to unsustainability. So green buildings were constructed to overcome these problems and green roofs are one of the segments of green buildings to attain sustainable development. Practice of green/ecofriendly roofs now became popular in the world today. Establishment of plant materials on roof tops improves air quality, storm water management, provides habitat for many living organisms, control pollution, conservation of energy. Green roofsmake the buildings more sustainable as they provide efficient energy and renewable energy. This paper reviews the benefits of green roofs, types of vegetation used in green roofs and their medicinal properties and throws light on role of green roofs to attain sustainable development. Apart from this paper also highlighted on vertical gardens/green walls as it plays a vital role in controlling surface temperature fluctuations and improves urban environment for sustainable living.
