Abstract

The aim of this work is to analyze the increased thermal conductivity of epoxy matrix with addition of nano fillers and its cooling impact on dry type transformer winding. Transformer being an inductive device generates large amount of heat, making it vulnerable to damages. In this work, Nano Alumina (NAL) particles were chosen as filler and it blended with epoxy resin to yield a composite with high thermal conductivity. NAL powder was prepared by ball-milling process and casted into mold with epoxy matrix. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural and impact), Thermal studies and morphological tests were taken to analyse the performance of the composite. With increased thermal conductivity of NAL/Epoxy composite, the temperature of the transformer decreases which yields higher efficiency. This paper looks into the feasibility of a nano alumina /epoxy composite to yield a reliable insulator cum solid coolant.
