Abstract

Purpose
There is an unfortunate lack of attention given to project management in the construction industry in
Libya. This insufficiency of focus has led to companies experiencing difficulties in managing
deadlines, staying within budget, quality control and other knowledge related areas in project
management. In summary, these factors that are highlighted contribute to the current gaps that
desperately needed to be filled to make project management within Libyan companies more efficient.
In addressing the issues surrounding collaborative projects, this paper highlights the dire need for the
design, development and application of a comprehensive framework to improve collaborative project
management.
Materials
Quantitative methods using data from 157 self-administered questionnaires collected from various
groups of employees working at Arab Drilling & Workover Company in Libya using random
sampling. Multiple regression analysis was used to test a set of hypothesis, and factor analysis was
used to identify which factor is the most significant in influencing project management among the
construction workers in Libya.
Findings
The findings showed that both time management and quality of work have significant positive
influence on cooperative project management in the Libyan construction industry context. This study
contributed significantly to the theoretical enhancement of the current knowledge in identifying factors
influencing employee cooperative project management in the Libyan construction industry.
Originality
It is hoped that the findings of this study will add new and relevant knowledge for both academicians
and project managers in the construction industry to better manage employees especially when
employing collaborative project management initiatives.
Implementation

This research attempted to identify the determinant of successful collaborative project management by
using Libyan’s construction industry to explore this subject in-depth within its context.
Conclusion
There are many factors influencing the success of collaborative projects. Project managers face a wide
variety of challenges ranging from managing employees of diverse culture, language, education and
skill, coordinating projects that are geographically widely dispersed, managing and coordinating
logistics between suppliers across a variety of different industries, and trying to integrate knowledge
repository and usage that are currently segregated. This situation is worse in the construction industry
since this industry is highly fragmented, lack of integration, and processes and activities are highly
complex. Projects in the construction industry are highly complex as project life cycles take a long
time to complete, skilled labour is scarce, and coordination, communication and collaborating between
diverse work teams is highly challenging. Market pressure induces the need for business strategies
involving partnering, joint ventures, partnership between public and private entities, and forging
strategic alliances. Rising of emerging construction trend such as Smart-Home development and
Industrialised Building System lead to a different collaborative understanding with new service
providers. Project management plays an instrumental role in the construction field.
