Abstract

Philosophical Humanism is any outlook or way of life cantered on human need
and interest. Sub-categories of this type include Christian Humanism and Modern
Humanism. Generally, the concept of Humanism basically recognizes the dignity, value,
and freedom of the individual and basic identity as a noble creative force having inherent
tremendous potentialities in the gamut of the universe. English Literature has illuminated
human dignity and value through Biblical characters both in action and in spirit. Wellek
and Warren aptly assert, ‘literature is one as art and humanity are one”. One can find a
stream of existential humanism in Rohinton Mistry’s fiction. His realistic pictures of life,
widen our sympathies, our sense of proportion, and educate our moral judgement. They
enlarge our comprehension of “human goodness, royalty, sufferings, needs” and human
relationships. Rohinton Mistry’s novels attempt and succeed at the same task. Most of the
themes of Rohinton Mistry are his experience with the contemporary society. As a social
humanist, their alacrity for scrutiny and the representation of community and social
balance in the Indian society raise him to the status of social novelist.
