Abstract

Message Digest 5 provides an important role in the application of password
authentication. However, it suffered collision attack such as brute force and dictionary attack. In this
paper, the Password Authentication was developed and the modified MD5 algorithm was introduced to
prevent collision attack. The security performance of the modified MD5 algorithm was analyzed using
Randomness Test such as Arithmetic mean and frequency (Monobit) test and obtained 54.4% and
59.09%, respectively, against original MD5 algorithm result of 52.74% and 22.75%. The modified
MD5 was improved to 1.66% for Arithmetic Mean and 36% difference for frequency (Monobit) test.
The results proved that the modified MD5 is better and passed the criterion for security based on
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).This means that if a strong standard-based
encryption algorithm is used, the password is protected. Using a strong encryption algorithm, password
authentication security is assured against dictionary attack.
