Abstract

This paper is aimed to study the effect of solution heat treatment on mechanical properties of Al alloy AA 6061 (Tensile, hardness and fatigue stresses), many specimens were prepared according to ASTM and In order to study the effect of artificial aging on mechanical properties, the samples were divided into two main groups for heat treatment at 550°C; the first was for 2 hours and the second was for 4 hours then quenched in water for each group. Artificial aging carried out at temperatures (150, 200, 250 and 300°C) for 1hour and then quenched in water. Several mechanical and characterization studies were performed on the treated specimens, including an investigation on their microstructure, hardness, tensile and fatigue test. From results, it was found that the best results from these cases were at solid solution heat treatment of 550°C for 4 hours and aging temperature of 200°C. At this case the fatigue strength and the ultimate tensile stress was (90.36 and 341) MPa respectively, also the hardness for this case was 132.2 HV.
