Abstract

- Despite being world’s two largest democracies and having common connections as large multiethnic and multi-religious countries, the India-U.S bilateral relationship was of mutual disbelief and mistrust. India’s warm relation with Soviet Union and its Non-alignment policy has remained a major cause for America’s misunderstanding upon India. With the prevailing mistrust between the two countries, the cold war period had been a period of missed opportunities for both the countries. But the post-Cold War era brought tremendous changes in the bilateral relationships. The decline of U.S-Soviet rivalry had also removed the rationale of India’s Non-alignment policy. The economic reforms of India in the early 1990s and the new global order in the twenty first century and emergence of India as a new force in the global economy, heralded a dawn of opportunities for both the countries. Mutual trust between the two largest democracies began to grow which had been missing for long years. Indian Americans in the American politics, provided support of America to India in the Kargil War against Pakistan in 1999 and U.S-India Civil Nuclear Agreement had played a significant role in the forging a strong bilateral relationship between the two nations. After the entry of U.S President Bush in 2001 succeeded by President Obama in 2009 there has been a tremendous development and both the countries emerged as strategic partners in the domain of science and technology. The mutual relationships between the countries also further developed with the emergence of Donald Trump as the US president and Narendra Modi as the Indian Prime Minister. The focus of the study is to analyze the Indo-U.S relationship and India’s achievement and advancement in the area of science and technology, education, trade and commerce, health etc.
