Redefinition of the Employment Status and Income Transformation of Online Transportation Workers in Palembang, Indonesia

Abstract

The study aims to explain the redefinition of the employment status and the income transformation of online transportation workers in Palembang City, Indonesia. The method employed was quantitative using cross-tabulation, a Mann-Whitney statistic test, Wilcoxon's statistic test, through SPSS 23. The findings were categorized into three. First, the online transportation workers were mostly young, male, not married, high school graduates, and migrants. Besides, they earned 3 million rupiahs. Second, online transportation was considered semi-formal because it was dominated by formal aspects, such as modern technology, and informal elements, such as flexible working hours. Third, there was an income transformation; in that, the workers received an increase before and after working in the online transportation sector.
