Abstract

Partition of 1947 gives an account of a large number of persons being tortured, abducted and sexually exploited. The emotional pain of severance from home and family cannot be described. Even after years, we see Partition remains unrequited in the historical experiences of the subcontinent. Partition called for barbarism in the best form. The act of cruelty cannot be assimilated into normal life. The extent of the violence is truly immeasurable. The different kinds of physical and psychological torture faced by the innocent people made us question the purpose of Partition of 1947. The historic decision was made to have peace between the different communities but resulted in a war of utmost cruelty and intolerance. The basic right to physical and mental well being was snatched away from the common people of that era. The vivid act of torture and violence committed during the time of Partition can only make us term it as an event which led to the upheaval of humanity. This paper tries to question the purpose behind the historic event of Partition and further states it as a horrific account of merciless torture and killing surrounding the two countries India and Pakistan.
