A study to understand the impact of Performance, Knowledge and Sustainability in the Food Supply Chain

Abstract

India with its open policies and governance is all set to become the food supplier of the world. The geographic
and climatic favorable conditions to varieties of fruits and vegetables are helping to grow in the agricultural
sector. The business inhibits to two major categories, cooking at home and convenience (Kirana stores) of
rural and urban folks of the previous generation. With new advancements in technological, consumer goods
industry and availability of home appliances such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, higher purchasing power
of individuals and changing food habits of the population has led to increase in the need for healthy processed
food. Major backlogs in supply chain sector with no process owners have been continual reasons for the nonperformance
of this sector as a whole. Therefore, there is a need for the attention of academicians, industry
and the government into food SCM to mitigate these challenges and bring renaissance for the growth and
emerge as the leader as global food supplier. It is important to draw attention as this paper expects to do , to
explore the variables that effect the performance , knowledge and sustainability issues that are the important
parameters that effect the governance and functional effectiveness of the food supply chain that would in turn
reduce the losses and wastages that create food insecurity.
