Abstract

Technology is spreading its wings in all the sectors, and agriculture is the one such domain that should
be modernized to meet the quality food requirement of today's growing population to nourish people with
sufficient and suitable quality food. Farmers should be motivated and get introduced to the new form of agriculture
to achieve this goal, called Precision agriculture (PA). Precision Agriculture is a growing arena of research
because of its most and best application of IoT (Internet of Things). PA is the key solution to improve the
agriculture process by monitoring the farm activities to make the right decisions at the right time in order to
optimize crop production using all the resources in the right way, which will maintain the ecological balance.
Internet of things (IoT) plays a significant role in Precision agriculture as all the information regarding field has
been provided by the sensors deployed in the field using wireless sensor networks and are capable of
communicating with each other over the Internet. This paper gives an insight into Precision agriculture, what it
is, why it is needed, and how it is implemented and useful. The discussion is elaborated in terms of different
phases of precision agriculture, the architecture of IoT, implementation of WSN, different topologies used, and
various communication protocols. Various spatial and temporal variabilities exist in the field. Types of sensors
related to agriculture are also discussed. Zone formation is one of the most important and critical features of
Precision Agriculture. Furthermore, it also spreads light on the different applications in precision agriculture and
the different challenges in the area of Precision agriculture
