Abstract

The objective of this research was to examine the effects of transformational leadership style
towards employees’ organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). The respondents for this study were
employees who were working for manufacturing companies in the city of Shah Alam, Malaysia. Two hundred
and eleven questionnaires were returned out of 250 distributed with a return rate of 84.4%. Findings of this
study revealed that four dimensions of transformational leadership style (Idealized Influence, Inspirational
Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation and Individual Consideration) had positive and significant relationships
with all elements under OCB except for the dimension of sportsmanship. Beside that, it was also found that
out of four dimensions of transformational leadership style, only two dimensions predicted organizational
citizenship behavior among employees which were Individual Consideration (?=.391, p<0.05) and
Inspirational Motivation (?=.227, p<0.05). The researchers recommend that managers must show empathy
and value their employees. In addition, managers should reward employees for their performance as well as
to provide a conducive working environment so that they can do their job in a favourable work setting. Giving
recognition to employees will further perpetuate their desire to go beyond their stipulated job specifications.
In addition, leaders should inspire their subordinates by showing that they have faith in them by displaying
exemplary behavior with mature responses to every challenging situation.
