Abstract

Major public emergencies will not only threaten the life and health of the human being, but also
pose grave challenges to the development of the global economy. The rapid global spread of the COVID-19
outbreak in early 2020 has exacerbated the uncertainties. By reviewing and sorting out the literature on the
economic impact of several major public health emergencies in history, this paper summarizes the impact of
major public health emergencies on economic growth, regional economy, macroeconomic indicators and
key industries. Finally, we summarize the advantages and disadvantages of the commonly used research
methods on the economic impact of major public health emergencies. The above analysis has important
reference value for studying the impact of COVID-19 on the world economy.
