The Collapse of the Kingdom of Lan Xang (Ancient Laos)

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the historical background and the collapse of the Kingdom of Lan Xang (A.D.1553 – A.D.1975). It was a Qualitative research. Tools used in the research were in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and behavior observations. Key informants consisted of 30 experts from the 3 different fields; History, Politics and Government, and Sociology. 10 experts of each field were selected. The obtained data were presented by the descriptive analysis method. The findings of the study were as follows: 1) The Kingdom of Lan Xang (A.D.1553 – A.D.1975) was Ancient Laos that located in the basin of Mekong river in all area including some part of northeastern Thailand. It had the prosperity in many areas such as government, culture and Buddhism. It was also developed along with the Kingdom of Lanna, Siam, Burma and Khmer. It was ruled by continuing Kings such as King Chai Setthathirat who had a close relationship with Thai king, Maha Chakkraphat. In the reign of Thammikarat, it was the golden age of the kingdom of Lan Xang. However, after he had passed away, Loa loyalties who tried to take the throne made Lan Xang Kingdom divided up into three Kingdoms consisted of Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champassak. 2) The collapse of Lan Xang Kingdom were from many causes such as disunion, usurpation, conflicts among royalties, population immigration, invasion from other states and wars. Expanding the power of imperialism made the power of Lan Xang Kingdom decline, death of military forces and people, and ruined houses.
