Abstract

This paper aims at probing pros and cons of certain methodologies and its possible way of using
them together by combining them to suit the learning capacity and the interest of the present students. It is
important that all macro skills as well as two micro skills have to be concentrated to develop the overall
proficiency of English language usage in students. In India, for college going students, learning English
language is not a new one as they have been learning English language for more than a decade at least as a
second language. Still students’ attempting to use this language remains a wonder. What hinders them from
using the learnt language is a fundamental question. Many approaches, methods and techniques have been
developed to teach English language. The teaching methods include, Grammar-translation, Audio-lingual,
Cognitive, Direct, natural approaches, community language learning, Task Based Language Teaching, TextBased instruction, Total Physical Response, Silent Way and Suggestopedia. In a same way, there have been
several second language learning and teaching methods. To name a few, the Academic style, audio lingual,
CLT, the TBL, Collaborative, Cooperative, Play Way, Activity Based and so on.
The first and foremost remark of the language teaching experts is that there is no connection between a
researcher and language teaching practitioner, that is a teacher. The second most important concern of this
paper is, can an application of any one particular theory or method support the enhancement of learners’
overall proficiency of English language usage. Or a creative way of combining different approaches,
methods and techniques is required. With the profound concern on these two major thoughts, this research
paper is set out for its exploration. To initiate the curbing of the absence of the connection between a
researcher and a teacher, the teachers are requested to share their valuable opinion on their choice of
approaches, methods and techniques to adhere in the research to enhance the current students’ proficiency in
using English language within part II English class
