Enhanced Sample Adaptive Offset Type Refinement in HEVC

Abstract

High efficiency video coding (HEVC) is the emerging video coding standard which optimizes video quality with the
same bit rate compare to H.264/AVC. It also provides 50\% bit rate reduction with respect to previous standards.
HEVC adopted few new tools to improve the efficiency. One of the technique is Sample Adaptive Offset (SAO) which
is used to minimize the artifacts by adding offset value to in-loop filter. In SAO, one of the complex operation is to
find the type which requires more cycles. Hence type elimination is main focus in SAO. This paper proposes a type
refinement technique for SAO in HEVC. The proposed algorithm resulted in -0.128 gain on BD-rate compared with
the existing algorithm in HEVC.
